Venishe Glassblower

Version: 1.0 (05-May-2001)
Author: Michael S. Thibault

NPC expert/noble prestige class for the magical glassblowers of Venishe.

In the middle of the harbour of the great port of Venishe is a small island-fortress where expert crafters are instructed in the ancient arcane art of blowing glass. Only those artisans who show the highest promise at a young age are taken to the island and taught the secrets of the craft that has supported the economy of the city for centuries. These secrets are very closely guarded and once an apprentice arrives on the island, he is never again allowed to leave. The spies and assassins of the Council of Twelve have managed to ensure that the monopoly on the production of these items is secure.

Gem Forgeries - At Level 1 the Venishe Glassblower can create glass imitations of gems and jewellery that appears to all non-magical inspection as being real. Dispel Magic will cause them to revert to a mundane glass form and a True Seeing spell will make the nature of the item obvious. Otherwise the rules for crafting items applies in regards to times to make Gem Forgeries. At most the cost of materials to create a gem forgery will be 50gp, most typical sizes of gems can be created with 5gp worth of glass.

Temper Glass - At level 1 the Venishe Glassblower acquires the supernatural ability to create glass that is as strong as steel. Tempered glass items can be crafted in any shape or form that either glass or steel could be crafted and has all of the properties that would expected from such an item. For example, a tempered glass sword would function as a steel sword, but would not be affected by magnetic force. Combination items, such as a tempered glass sword with a magnifying glass built into the base of the blade would be considered a masterwork item. Tempered glass items cost 20X that of a similar mundane item. Tempered glass does is magical in nature but does not radiate magic on its own accord and is not affected by Dispel Magic or Antimagic fields. This ability does not allow the creation of masterwork items.

Masterwork Tempered Glass - At level 2 the Glassblower acquires the supernatural ability to create masterwork items out of Tempered Glass. The cost to do so is double that for a mundane masterwork item. E.g. A masterwork tempered glass long sword would cost 900gp (300gp for the base price of a tempered glass long sword + 600gp as the price modifier for a masterwork weapon).

Flexile Glass - At level 2 the Venishe Glassblower acquires the supernatural ability to create glass that has the properties of wood. It is strong, light and does not shatter, but is flexible and grained. It can be used and worked in any manner that wood can be used and worked but it does not burn. Planks, boards, posts, carved sculptures, bows, arrow shafts or any other item that is made of wood can be made from flexile glass. The cost to do so is 20X that of a similar mundane item. Flexile glass is magical in nature but does not radiate magic on its own accord and is not affected by Dispel Magic or Antimagic fields. This ability does not allow the creation of masterwork items.

Masterwork Flexile Glass - At level 3 the Glassblower acquires the supernatural ability to create masterwork items out of Flexile Glass. The cost to do so is double that for a mundane masterwork item.

Imbue Magic Glass - At level 4 the Venishe Glassblower can create magic items as if he has the Craft Wondrous Item feat and Craft Arms and Armour feat. He can also cast arcane spells from scrolls for this, and only this, purpose even if he would not normally be able to do so. He knows intimately the nature of the magical glass he has created and this overcomes the difficulty of casting arcane spells into the object. In all other situations, without such inherent knowledge of the target of the spell, the casting will fail as usual. Even if he is normally able to cast the requisite spells for creating the item, this ability does not work on any object that is not Tempered or Flexile glass and not made with the imbuer's own hands.

The Items that he can create are:

  • Eyes of the eagle (Core Rulebook III)
  • Metamagic Vial
  • Goblet of Potability
  • Mirror of Travel
  • Snifter of vileness (Forthcoming)
  • Spectacles of Protection from Charms (Forthcoming)

Venishe Glassblower Magic Items

Spectacles of Protection from Charms
(Wondrous Item)

These paired glass lenses are usually attached together by a thin wire frame. Whoever wears these spectacles is immune to the spells Daze, Charm Person, and Hypnotism. Furthermore they gain a +2 bonus to Will saves vs. mind affecting spells and spell-like abilities.

Market price: 4,000gp. Prerequisite: Venishe Glassblower L4

Snifter of Vileness
(Wondrous Item)

This elegant goblet appears to be a well-crafted but inauspicious piece of glassware. Any liquid that is placed in the snifter becomes odourless and noxious.

Metamagic Vial
(Wondrous Item)

These small clear vials are made from Venishe Tempered Glass. They are coveted by Wizards and Sorcerers everywhere for their ability to enhance effects of potions. Unfortunately the secret to their creation is closely guarded by the Venishe Glassblowers and even the most powerful wizards have not been able to solve the puzzle. These vials have been imbued with the power to treat any potion that is stored in it as if it were enhanced with a metamagic feat. There are 4 different types of vials: Empowered, Extended, Heightened and Maximized. Each individual vial is limited as to the level of spell it is able to enhance. Either a vial affects potions that mimic 1st and 2nd level spells or it affects potions that mimic 3rd and 4th level spells. The more powerful vial cannot affect, but doesn=t ruin, lower level potions. The less powerful vials likewise do not ruin or affect more powerful potions.

If the vial is not used in the initial creation of the potion the liquid must be poured from its original container. A dexterity check DC10 must be rolled to avoid spilling a significant portion of the 1 ounce potion.

Empowered Vial - 1.5x variable effects.
Market price: L1-2 Vial 16,000gp, L3-4 Vial 32,000gp

Extended Vial - 2x duration.
Market Price: L1-2 Vial 10,000gp, L3-4 Vial 28,000gp

Heighten Vial - Higher Spell Level
Market Price: 1 slot 2,000, 2 slots 10,000, 3 slots 19,000, 4 slots 28,000

Maximize Vial - Variable effects maximum.
Market Price: L1-2 Vial 19,000gp, L3-4 Vial 37,000gp

Prerequisite: Venishe Glassblower L4

Goblet of Potability
(Wondrous Item)

This stemmed glass goblet, made of Venishe tempered glass, is enchanted such that any liquid poured into it becomes healthy and delicious. Any poisons or magical effects are negated, and all brackishness or salinity is removed. The liquid that remains is a unique clear, sweet nectar. Physical objects in the liquid are not destroyed or altered, only physical objects that have been dissolved into the liquid will be destroyed.

Potions of all sorts are rendered ineffective when poured into the goblet. If the liquid is poured out of the goblet it becomes mundane water, but is otherwise safe to drink.

Market Price: 2000gp. Prerequisites: Venishe Glassblower Level 4.

Mirror of Travel
(Wondrous Item)

These large full length mirrors act as magical portals. If the keyword is known, then one can step through one mirror and out of another specific mirror regardless of where that mirror is located. If stepping through the mirror would cause the user to step into a solid object or force effect the attempt fails and the user cannot step through. Each mirror has its own keyword which cannot be changed after the item is created. Saying the keyword word and stepping through is a standard action. The mirror glows when a valid keyword is uttered. If the keyword is uttered by the same user a second time or if the user who uttered the word steps through, the mirror returns to a dormant state.

These mirrors are made of Venishe Tempered Glass and can be mounted in any decorative frame without altering their usefulness or effect.

Cost to create: 25,000gp. Prerequisites: Venishe Glassblower Level 4.

Venishe Rapiers (Tempered Glass Rapiers)
(Specific Weapon)

Expertly crafted by the Venishe Glassblowers, the Venishe Rapier is the favoured weapon of the nobility and gentry of that city. Indeed, there are laws against possessing one if you do not hold a title or permanent house of business in the city.

This weapon acts as a +1 Keen Rapier that grants a +2 enhancement bonus to the charisma of the wielder. The charisma bonus is in effect while the weapon is sheathed at the owner's side, but not if it is stored or stashed anywhere else on the wielder's person.

A stronger version of the Venishe Rapier is also available that acts as a +2 Keen Rapier of Defending that grants a +4 enhancement bonus to the wielder's charisma. The same restrictions to the charisma bonus apply.

Market Price: Lesser, 17,000gp. Greater, 49,000gp. Prerequisites: Venishe Glassblower Level 4.
